Who are you? What do you do for a living?
I'm Erin Kanagy-Loux, Executive Pastry Chef for Reynard at the Wythe Hotel.
On the weekends, I wake up to my 3 year old son Seven asking me to play "race cars" with him. I make him crawl up onto the bed and give me giant bear hugs and kisses.
After we hop on bikes and I drop Seven off at daycare, I head into work at the Wythe. First thing at work is to look at the pastry case to see the product for the day, then I head to coffee. I grab my coffee and sparkling water, say good morning to the FOH and line staff and head to my cellar. My opener is usually busy running around filling room service orders and getting the morning and lunch all set up for service. I check our service log to see how the end of the previous night went and see what we have in store for us for the day. I write up a production list and head to the computer. I spend about 1.5 hrs doing admin computer work (which I hate because I don't sit well). After printing the menus for the day and catching up on menu writing and weekly events I hit the kitchen.
Breakfast? What is that?
I tend to not eat breakfast, I'm usually too busy either getting my son ready for school or me getting my staff prepared for the day ahead. The earliest I eat is usually 10:30am at family meal. I typically have undressed salad because it usually takes me all day to eat the salad and if it's dressed the greens get all wilty and pretty gross. I'll also have egg white scramble, not for figure reasons but b/c in pastry we pretty much only use the yolk so we have a plethora of whites left over. We use incredible organic eggs and I can't bare to throw away any, so we keep it and eat what we can't use.
Hobbies of a Mommy
My weekends are rarely on a normal person's weekend. I try to take Sunday & Mondays off and always enjoy a "weekend" day and "weekday" day off. I really just like to spend time with my son as much as I can when I can. We like to go check out all of the playgrounds around NYC, go for bike rides, stay home and watch movies and eat popcorn. When it's just me, I really love eating and cooking. Most of my activities have to do with food in one way or another, whether it's going out to eat or visiting different areas of New York and seeing the cuisine, checking out a new bakery or brewery. I love just walking the city and seeing what new things there are for me to discover. Other big interests in my life are bowling as well as music and I try to see shows when I can.
A Typical Sunday Morning
Starts off like any other morning with my spud, but we'll hang around and watch cartoons. I'll make coffee and make him some eggs or rice, and we'll just hang. Later on we may go to the park and he'll ride his bike and play and we'll meet up with a friend for a wine and some french fries.
Elaborate Feasts Sometimes
On my weekend for breakfast my son and I will either cook some elaborate feast of eggs, pancakes or french toast, or we'll go to brunch with friends. We love Roberta's or Bun-ker, or my work, or one of our other sister restaurants (love Diner).
Cartoons and Cooking
On the weekends I watch a whole lot of: Thomas the Train, Cars, Cars 2, Magic School bus . . . . I read pastry blogs, and food lovers companion. I'll catch up on my "stories" (my ridiculous tv shows I love to watch), I cook and relax.
It ends with an amazing dinner made by my love and me, a couple of really nice bottles of wine, curled up on the couch with a movie . . . perfect.
